Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Claudio Vargas allowed six singles in seven-plus innings and rookie Terrmel Sledge collected three hits as the Montreal Expos blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-0. Vargas (3-2) allowed four hits through the first seven innings and turned in his longest outing of the season. He walked two, struck out two and departed after allowing back-to-back hits to rookie Chad Tracy and Matt Kata in the eighth. Vargas lasted just two innings at Arizona last August. But on Saturday, he allowed just one runner to reach second base and got 18 outs in the air. "He was darn good is what he was. He had us on a rocking chair all night," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. The Diamondbacks lost their fourth in a row and dropped to 2-7 on a 10-game homestand. Following the game, Brenly did not hide his displeasure at the team's struggles. "We (stink) and that is what it is." Brenly said. "When we need to pitch well we don't pitch well. When we need to hit well we don't hit well. We are an equal opportunity (screw up). We find ways to lose games and I am really (bleeping) tired of it." The second-year righthander's outing was backed by productive nights by Sledge and former Diamondback Tony Batista. Sledge continued his recent tear with a single in the fourth, a run-scoring triple in the fifth and a solo homer in the eighth. Since opening the season with just one hit in 34 at-bats, Sledge is hitting .429 (21-for-49) in his last 16 contests. Batista, who had just six hits in his previous 35 at-bats, had a season-high three RBI. The slumping third baseman opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first, plated two runs with a two-base hit in the fourth and scored on Sledge's triple. "Tonight I got couple of base hits and some RBI and if I continue like that we will have more chances to score," Batista said. Luis Ayala allowed one hit in two innings, finishing Montreal's fourth shutout of the season. In the eighth, Ayala gave up a one-out single to Steve Finley that loaded the bases but got Shea Hillenbrand to bounce into a double play. The Expos won back-to-back road games for the second time this season. They also clinched their third series victory of the season. "That is what we have to do is keep winning series," Montreal manager Frank Robinson said. "We can't get it all back at one time. You can't think about sweeping people. You can't think about winning 10 in a row. Just go in and think about winning series." Arizona rookie starter Casey Daigle (2-2) lasted just 4 2/3 innings and was reached for four runs and seven hits. He had won his previous two decisions but in this one, gave up all four runs with two outs. In the first, he walked Orlando Cabrera and allowed a single to Brad Wilkerson, putting runners at the corners. Batista followed with a double down the left field line. In the fifth, Daigle gave up a double to Cabrera and walked Wilkerson. Batista again doubled down the left field line and Sledge tripled over right fielder Danny Bautista's head. "I felt good but those three walks really hurt me," Daigle said. "A couple of guys hit good pitches but I left a slider over the plate to Batista."
