Game Story
MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Red-hot Lyle Overbay keyed a four-run
sixth inning with a two-run double and scored the go-ahead run
on an error as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 4-3 victory
over the Montreal Expos.
The Brewers won for the fourth time in five games and moved over
.500 (17-16) for the first time since April 30. Montreal
(10-24) dropped its third straight game.
Expos starter Zach Day (2-4) took a 3-0 lead into the sixth and
got the leadoff hitter before Craig Counsell doubled and Keith
Ginter snapped an 0-for-14 slide with a single to put runners at
the corners.
Geoff Jenkins singled home a run and Overbay doubled to deep
center, extending his hitting streak to 13 games and pulling the
Brewers to a 3-3 tie.
Wes Helms followed with a grounder to the left of second baseman
Jose Vidro, who misplayed it for an error that allowed Overbay
to score.
"He was throwing the pitches down," said Overbay, who grounded
out in his first two at-bats against Day. "It was tough to get
a base hit and to elevate something up in the air to get a line
drive or something in the gap when he keeps the ball down."
Day had retired 11 straight Brewers before he gave up four
straight hits in the sixth.
"With Overbay, it was just a breaking ball that I hung," Day
said. "The two batters before that, I thought I made good
pitches."
Overbay doubled a second time in the eighth off reliever Jeremy
Fikac to raise his season total to 18, tops in the National
League.
After a five-run ninth inning in an 8-5, 14-inning victory
Tuesday, Brewers manager Ned Yost was glad to see his team put
some hits together again.
"Right now Lyle is really swinging the bat good," Yost said.
"Wes (Helms) is swinging the bat better. (Jenkins) is right
there, getting ready to explode. With Counsell and (Scott)
Podsednik doing their thing, you feel good about your offense."
Wes Obermueller (2-1) allowed three runs and five hits in six
innings, striking out two without a walk. The bullpen pitched
three scoreless innings, with Danny Kolb working the ninth for
his seventh save and his 10th straight dating back to last
season.
Day allowed four runs, six hits and a walk in six innings,
striking out six. He also hit a 365-foot home run to left field
in the third inning, the first by an Expos pitcher since Britt
Reames on May 21, 2001 against the New York Mets.
Podsednik stole second in the seventh inning and is 19-for-19
this season.
