Game Story
MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Wes Helms picked a great time to drive
in his first run in more than a month.
Helms blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 14th inning
to help the Milwaukee Brewers rally for an improbable 8-5
victory over the Montreal Expos.
"Sometimes you have to throw away what everybody else says and
find it yourself," Helms said. "We never give up. I've never
been on a team where the dugout is so positive."
With one out in the 14th, Geoff Jenkins and Lyle Overbay singled
off T.J. Tucker (0-1), putting runners at the corners. Helms
blasted the first pitch he saw into the left-center field seats
for his first RBI since April 10.
Livan Hernandez came within one out of his second consecutive
complete game when the Brewers' furious five-run ninth-inning
rally began.
Jenkins drilled a solo homer to right to end the shutout bid.
Hernandez allowed a walk and single before departing for Rocky
Biddle.
"I was all set to come in here to tell you guys how great
Hernandez had pitched," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "He
hadn't even broken a sweat up to that point."
Biddle yielded an RBI single to Chad Moeller and a run-scoring
double to Brooks Kieschnick. Scott Podsednik lined an
opposite-field single to left that plated Moeller and pinch
runner Brady Clark, tying the contest.
"There is a lot of heart and character running around this
clubhouse," Podsednik said. "It doesn't matter if we're down.
Until that 27th out is recorded we're coming after you."
The victory was the seventh come-from behind win for Milwaukee
and the fourth in their last at-bat.
Hernandez allowed seven hits and struck out nine while making
128 pitches. He clearly had run out of steam when Montreal
manager Frank Robinson made the change.
"It's a darn shame we couldn't win the ballgame for him,"
Robinson said. "I just felt like he had thrown enough pitches. I
just felt like where is it gonna stop. Let's get a fresh arm
in there and give him a chance to make a mistake or two and
still win the ballgame. Relief pitchers aren't going to be
perfect. We just didn't get anybody out."
Dave Burba (3-0) tossed the last of five scoreless extra innings
for the Brewers' bullpen.
The win improved the Brewers record in extra inning games to
2-5. They had been outscored 6-1 in extra-inning contests.
Milwaukee also snapped a seven-game losing streak against
Montreal.
"To lose a game like that in the ninth inning, it hurts you and
they can stay with you for a while," Robinson said. "That's one
you have to put in the win column."
Overbay's single in the 14th inning extended his hitting streak
to 12 games.
