Game Story
MONTREAL (Ticker) -- Tomo Ohka took matters into his own hands.
A victim of poor run support, Ohka combined with Rocky Biddle on
a three-hitter as the Montreal Expos blanked the St. Louis
Cardinals, 2-0, for their first three-game winning streak of the
season.
Ohka (1-5) allowed three hits in eight innings with a walk and
six strikeouts before Biddle tossed a perfect ninth for his
seventh save.
"We didn't really give him a lot of run support again, but it
was enough and I'm glad he got the first win," Expos catcher
Brian Schneider said.
Jose Vidro drove in both runs for Montreal with an RBI double in
the third and a solo home run in the fifth.
"The main thing is I helped my team get a win out there and Ohka
did an unbelievable job," Vidro said. "He was really on top of
his game."
Ohka avoided becoming the first Montreal pitcher to start 0-6
since Ray Burris in 1982. In Ohka's previous five starts,
however, the Expos scored only two runs. They were shut out
three times and managed one run in his other two outings.
"He just kept the hitters off balance all night long and I
couldn't ask for anything better after the game he gave me
tonight," Montreal manager Frank Robinson said.
Ohka gave up a double to Albert Pujols in the fourth and singles
by Hector Luna in the fifth and eighth. St. Louis did not get
a runner past second.
"He was mixing pitches up and down," Pujols said. "We just need
to come back tomorrow and try to win a game."
Montreal rookie Terrmel Sledge went 2-for-3, extending his
hitting streak to 10 games. He is batting .533 (16-for-30)
during the streak, which followed a 1-for-34 start to the
season.
"The better feeling is we're winning," Sledge said. "The streak
comes with it, but I'm up here having fun. I just love
winning. We're in a groove right now. The atmosphere in the
clubhouse is great."
Jason Marquis (1-3) took the loss, yielding two runs and seven
hits in seven innings.
The Expos broke on top in the third as Endy Chavez reached on a
bunt single to start the inning and scored on Vidro's double to
deep center field.
"I had struggles early on with my mechanics," Marquis said. "It
took me to about the third inning today, maybe the fourth
inning until I felt comfortable."
