Game Story

MONTREAL (Ticker) -- The Montreal Expos displayed some rare power and got to enjoy a rare laugher. Endy Chavez, rookie Termell Sledge and Jose Vidro homered as the Expos turned their best offensive outburst of the season into a 10-4 rout of the Colorado Rockies. Montreal, which has the worst record in the major leagues, scored more than six runs for the first time this season. The Expos belted three homers for the second straight game after managing only 11 in their first 25 contests. "It's been a while coming, but it's started to pick up a little bit in the last few games on the West Coast," Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "The guys started swinging the bats a little better and this is what we've been looking about with this ballclub." Chavez had a three-run shot off Rockies starter Jason Jennings (1-4) with one out in the fifth inning. Sledge, who had three hits, added a two-run blast against Turk Wendell in the sixth for an 8-1 bulge. "It's a good feeling to help the team win like that," Chavez said. "We've been struggling so I feel pretty good, because it's my first home run of the season and we got the win." Montreal has won two straight for the second time this season and captured consecutive games at home for the first time in 2004. Expos starter Claudio Vargas (2-1) was the beneficiary of the offense. Vargas allowed four runs and six hits but struck out a career-high seven in 6 2/3 innings - also a season high. Every starter for the Expos except the battery of Vargas and Brian Schneider had at least one hit as Montreal pounded out 14, including five for extra bases. Vidro's first-inning solo homer started the onslaught. "They're not going to hit like that all year, but that doesn't mean we have to be the team that gives up 10 runs and 14 hits," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. Colorado evened the game at 1-1 on Jeromy Burnitz's seventh homer in the fourth inning. Montreal answered and took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when Vidro drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Orlando Cabrera's one-out single. "It took us a long time to see offense like we put out there tonight." Vidro said. "It's two games in a row and now we've got to keep building and keep building." Jennings was tagged for six runs and eight hits in just five innings. The struggling righthander is 0-3 with a 13.20 ERA in his last three starts. "I pitched a lot better than I did, even the last game," Jennings said. "That's why this game is a little more frustrating. because I had good stuff tonight."
