Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Adrian Beltre homered twice and singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Montreal Expos. Beltre opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first inning and started the seventh with another home run to forge a 4-4 tie. But his biggest hit came in the eighth, when the Expos refused to pitch around him. "I feel more confident than last year," Beltre said. "If you go to the plate with confidence, you can hit any pitch. The first one was a fastball, the second was a slider. Hopefully, I can keep getting lucky." "Hey, he is incredible," Dodgers starter Jose Lima said. "I just knew we would come back in this game." Jason Grabowski opened the eighth with a double off Luis Ayala (0-5) and took third on a sacrifice by Dave Roberts. After Cesar Izturas grounded out, Beltre hit a hard grounder into right field to plate Grabowski. "I think we showed our mettle tonight," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. "The pinch hit double by Grabowski was huge. And you can't put down a better bunt than Roberts did." The Dodgers turned it over to Eric Gagne, who converted his 70th consecutive save opportunity by striking out the side in the ninth. It was his seventh save of the season. Guillermo Mota (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth for the win against his former team as four Los Angeles relievers combined for four scoreless innings. "Our bullpen did a terrific job tonight," Tracy said. "And the job that our third baseman (Beltre) is doing is phenomenal." Expos starter Livan Hernandez turned in seven solid innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, but the bullpen and offense were unable to pull out a win. "He pitched OK," Expos manager Frank Robinson said of Hernandez. "He pitched well enough to win a ballgame, it was just not enough to win tonight."
