Game Story
LAKELAND, Florida (Ticker) -- Henry Mateo's two-run single off
Shane Loux with two outs in the ninth inning lifted a split
squad of Montreal Expos to a 6-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers
in a Grapefruit League matchup.
Montreal rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs off Eric
Eckenstahler in the sixth inning, taking advantage of an error
by third baseman Eric Munson. Mateo, who entered the game as
pinch runner in the sixth, came through with the game-winner in
his second at-bat.
Randy Knorr walked to open the inning and went to third on a
double by Vince Rooi. Loux retired the next two batters but was
handed his second loss when Mateo lined a full-count offering
up the middle.
Expos reliever Ron Ciabecci pitched a perfect ninth inning for
his first save. Mike Judd recorded the victory after pitching a
hitless eighth.
Detroit starter Nate Cornejo allowed just one run and two hits
in five innings but watched his bullpen squander a three-run
lead. Carlos Pena homered and Dmitri Young had two hits for the
Tigers. |
