JUPITER, Florida (Ticker) -- Kevin Witt belted a grand slam in
the first inning and Jeff Suppan pitched four solid innings of
relief as a split squad of St. Louis Cardinals posted a 7-1
victory over the Montreal Expos.
Witt homered off losing pitcher Seung Song and finished the
contest with five RBI.
Suppan allowed one unearned run and three hits while striking
out six and walking none. Adam Wainwright scattered five hits
over four scoreless innings for the save. He struck out three
and did not issue a walk.
Albert Pujols, runner-up for the National League MVP award,
collected two hits and scored twice for the Cardinals.
St. Louis backup catcher Chris Widger was hit in the back of the
head before the game and did not play. The Cardinals recalled
catcher Dan Moylan from Class AA Tennessee to play backup to
Mike Matheny.
After giving up Witt's homer, Song settled down for the next
three innings. He gave up four runs and three hits, struck out
one and walked two.
