Game Story

JUPITER, Florida (Ticker) -- Kevin Witt belted a grand slam in the first inning and Jeff Suppan pitched four solid innings of relief as a split squad of St. Louis Cardinals posted a 7-1 victory over the Montreal Expos. Witt homered off losing pitcher Seung Song and finished the contest with five RBI. Suppan allowed one unearned run and three hits while striking out six and walking none. Adam Wainwright scattered five hits over four scoreless innings for the save. He struck out three and did not issue a walk. Albert Pujols, runner-up for the National League MVP award, collected two hits and scored twice for the Cardinals. St. Louis backup catcher Chris Widger was hit in the back of the head before the game and did not play. The Cardinals recalled catcher Dan Moylan from Class AA Tennessee to play backup to Mike Matheny. After giving up Witt's homer, Song settled down for the next three innings. He gave up four runs and three hits, struck out one and walked two.
