Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers got six good innings out of Kazuhisa Ishii. The Montreal Expos could not say the same of their starter Zach Day. The Dodgers tagged Day for six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings en route to a 13-4 rout of the reeling Expos, who lost for the eighth time in nine games. "We hit rock bottom tonight," Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "This is as low as we can go. Maybe this will make us mad and determined. We got embarrassed tonight." Ishii (4-1) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings as he improved to 3-0 at home. "We got another solid outing from Kazuhisa Ishii," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. "We're coming to expect that kind of performance from him." "He's been great," Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca said of Ishii. "His tempo is there again and he's a lot smoother than he was last year." Every Dodgers position player had at least one hit and one RBI as they avoided their second losing streak of the season. Los Angeles took the lead for good, 3-2, on Paul Lo Duca's solo homer against Day (2-2) with one out in the fourth inning, the catcher's first of the season. "Offensively we got a number of hits from up and down the entire order," Tracy said. The Dodgers added four runs with two outs in the sixth to open a 7-2 cushion. Juan Encarnacion rapped a two-run single that chased Day, and Jason Grabowski and Alex Cora added RBI singles against Chad Bentz. "The key hit that eluded us last year was the two-out hit," Tracy said. "Tonight it was the two-out RBI by Encarnacion. Then we got a couple more. When we do things like that, we're going to score enough runs to win the game." Los Angeles produced one run against T.J. Tucker in the seventh inning and five in the eighth against Rocky Biddle as it produced its highest run total since scoring 16 runs against San Francisco on April 20, 2003. The win came a day after the Mets became the first visiting team this season to win a series at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles improved to 7-1 following a loss this season. "It felt good for us to rebound from that series and pile on the runs," said Dodgers center fielder Dave Roberts, who had a two-run triple in the eighth inning. Los Angeles shortstop Cesar Izturis continued his torrid April, adding two hits and two RBI. He has at least one hit in 16 of his last 17 games and 19 of 21 this season. "I can't say enough about Cesar," Lo Duca said. "He just keeps getting good at-bat after good at-bat." Lo Duca's two hits gave him an average of .416, marking the highest average by a Dodger in the opening month of a season since Ron Cey batted .425 in April 1977. The win improved the Dodgers' record to 14-8, their best 22-game start since 1988 - the year of their last world title. It keeps them atop the National League West Division, a spot they have held or shared since April 14. "It's a great way to start the season, no doubt about it," Lo Duca said. "We just have to keep it going from here and see where it takes us."
