Game Story

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Rookie Khalil Greene's two-out triple in the bottom of the eighth inning plated Ramon Hernandez with the go-ahead run as the San Diego Padres rallied for a 5-4 triumph over the Montreal Expos. Trailing 4-2 after seven innings, the Padres tagged three relievers for three runs in the eighth. Rigo Beltran allowed a leadoff single by Brian Giles and was replaced by Chad Cordero, who walked Phil Nevin and retired Ryan Klesko on a groundout, moving Giles to third. Luis Ayala (0-4), who took the loss in Monday's series opener, came on and yielded Jay Payton's infield single, which plated Giles. Hernandez's grounder resulted in a forceout at second, but the San Diego catcher beat second baseman Jose Vidro's relay throw to first base, allowing pinch runner Kerry Robinson to score the tying run. Hitless in his previous 10 at-bats, Greene ended the slide by lining Ayala's 0-1 pitch to right-center field for his third career triple. "I had struck out two times before that," Greene said. "I was thinking that anything was better than striking out. I just tried to put the bat on the ball." "We just didn't get the job done in the eighth inning," Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "That's my fault. I'll take that one myself because I didn't put the right people out there to get the job done." Greene's hit gave the Padres their fifth straight win at PETCO Park and fifth overall victory in their final at-bat. "Great comeback. It wasn't real pretty but overall, I thought it was a well-played game on both sides," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said. "These are great wins when you can come from behind and win in your last at-bat. "It wasn't looking good. They were pitching well, but we kept grinding. You have to feel you can come back, and this club does." Antonio Osuna (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Closer Trevor Hoffman worked around a hit in the ninth for his fifth save in six opportunities. The worst hitting team in the major leagues, Montreal pounded out a season-high 13 but also stranded 10 runners. "Yeah, it can get worse," Robinson said. "I just hope that it will get better before it gets any worse." Andy Fox gave Montreal a 1-0 lead in the first inning when he hit his first home run since September 13, 2002. But starter Claudio Vargas surrendered solo shots by Giles and Nevin, giving the Padres a 2-1 edge. The Expos jumped ahead with three runs in the sixth. Endy Chavez tied the game with an RBI single and Jamey Carroll, who had a career-high four hits, delivered a two-run double. San Diego starter Adam Eaton gave up four runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings.
