Game Story
SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Miguel Ojeda's two-out single in the
bottom of the ninth inning plated Jay Payton with the winning
run as the San Diego Padres edged the Montreal Expos, 3-2, in
the opener of a four-game series.
Payton started the ninth against Luis Ayala (0-3) with a base
hit to left field and pinch hitter Adam Eaton - a pitcher - got
down a sacrifice. Rookie Khalil Greene flied out, but Ojeda
looped a single into center field to easily score the speedy
Payton.
Although this was the first time that Ojeda faced Ayala in the
major leagues, they are familiar foes from their days in Mexico.
"I've faced him many, many times in Mexico," Ojeda said. "I know
what kind of stuff he has. He's a very good pitcher. He got
me out (almost) every time I faced him in Mexico. But, it was
my turn tonight."
"(Ojeda) just got enough of that to get it over the shortstop's
head," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's what you need
late in the game, you need a clutch hit, and we got it."
The game was a pitchers' duel early between Montreal veteran
Livan Hernandez and 22-year-old righthander Jake Peavy.
Hernandez allowed two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He
walked three but struck out six and has allowed just 11 runs in
five starts this season, lasting at least six innings in each
outing.
Peavy carried a shutout into the sixth before tiring. He
allowed two runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking one
and striking out seven.
In five starts this season, Peavy has yet to allow more than two
runs.
Jay Witasick followed Peavy and got two outs, as did Scott
Linebrink. Akinori Otsuka (2-1) won for the second time in
three days with two scoreless innings.
Since suffering the loss in his major league debut on April 6 in
Los Angeles, Otsuka has tossed 9 2/3 scoreless innings.
"(Otsuka) just been huge for us," Bochy said. "He pitched
outstanding and got his second win tonight. We needed somebody
to shut them down and give us a chance, and he did it. He's got
a great makeup about him, he's got great stuff, and he's saved
us a few times this year."
Jose Vidro and Tony Batista had RBI for Montreal, which has
scored just 36 runs in 20 games. That's 30 fewer than the New
York Mets, who are next in the majors.
"We are not a shutout pitching staff," Expos manager Frank
Robinson said. "But it seems like that is what we have to do to
win a ballgame."
In the sixth inning, aggressive running hurt the Expos. With
rookie Endy Chavez at second, Vidro drove a pitch down the right
field line for extra bases. A perfect relay throw by second
baseman Mark Loretta was just in time to get Vidro at third -
costing the Expos a run when Brad Wilkerson followed with a
double.
"I don't mind players being aggressive but you have to make sure
you can make it," Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "But, it
was a bang-bang play and they had to make a perfect throw to get
him."
San Diego scored twice in the fourth on RBI singles by Payton and
Ramon Hernandez.
