Game Story

MONTREAL (Ticker) -- The Montreal Expos enjoyed their best offensive game of the season. Unfortunately, so did Bobby Abreu. Abreu went 4-for-5 with five RBI and Jim Thome homered in his third straight game as the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-6 triumph over the Expos. After scoring six runs in their previous three games, the Expos matched that total in this one. They rallied from an early 5-1 deficit with a four-run sixth inning that was aided by a miscue by second baseman Placido Polanco. "It was good to see the bats come alive tonight," Montreal manager Frank Robinson said. "Hopefully, we'll continue to hit that way." But Abreu, who belted a three-run homer in the first inning and had an RBI double in the second, led off the seventh with another two-base hit and scored four batters later on a groundout by David Bell to put the Phillies ahead for good. Abreu made it 7-5 in the eighth with his third double of the game. "It was working today," said Abreu, who entered with a .170 average. "I felt good at the plate, saw the ball good. I just put the ball in play." Thome followed Abreu's first-inning blast with a solo shot, giving him four homers in his last five games. Kevin Millwood (2-2) got the win, despite allowing five runs - three earned - and 10 hits in six innings. Billy Wagner yielded a run in the ninth before notching his fifth save. "This was probably the worst I've pitched all year," Millwood admitted. "You get four runs in the first, you relax a bit. To allow them to come back and tie it is not a good job by me." Chad Bentz (0-2) gave up the run in the seventh, but starter Claudio Vargas put Montreal in an early hole by allowing five runs and six hits in just 1 2/3 innings. "Vargas dug us a big hole early in the ballgame and you just can't overcome those things," Robinson said. "Our pitchers can't let that happen because it takes us almost right out of the ballgame." The six runs surpassed the Expos' previous season high of four, set Sunday at Philadelphia. The Phillies opened a 4-0 lead before Vargas recorded an out. Marlon Byrd led off the game with a single and Polanco walked before Abreu launched an 0-1 pitch over the right-center field wall for his third homer. "Bobby swung the bat real well," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "It seems like every time here, he gets a homer." Thome followed with his fifth blast of the season. "You have to throw the ball over the plate. He didn't do it in his last outing and he didn't do it this time," Robinson said of Vargas. "I don't know what it is. ... He was all over the place in Philadelphia the last time he started." Montreal, which is 0-4 against the Phillies this season, got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Tony Batista. But Philadelphia answered in the second with Abreu's run-scoring double. "Abreu was locked in all night and he did a lot of damage to us," Montreal first baseman Brad Wilkerson said. "He's been struggling, but you can't take him for granted." Wilkerson began the Expos' comeback in the sixth with an RBI double. One out later, Terrmel Sledge collected his first major league RBI with a single that made it 5-3. Sledge scored on an infield hit by Endy Chavez and Polanco made an errant throw that allowed Brian Schneider to score the tying run.
