Game Story

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- With plenty of defensive help, Livan Hernandez turned another night of meager offensive production by the Montreal Expos into a win. Hernandez allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings and the Expos threw out a pair of runners at the plate in a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets. The Expos won by a 2-1 score for the second straight night and have managed a mere 24 runs in 15 games this season. But that was enough on Wednesday thanks to Hernandez (1-2), who won for the first time in four starts this season by allowing seven hits and striking out six. Hernandez left after center fielder Brad Wilkerson threw out Karim Garcia trying to score on a single by Mike Piazza in the eighth. "The defense was good tonight," Hernandez said. "The defense won the game tonight." Leading the way was Wilkerson, who decoyed Garcia by holding his glove in the air before fielding the soft single and throwing to catcher Brian Schneider, who held on to the ball as Garcia tried to jar it loose. "I put my glove up to try to slow the runner up a little bit," Wilkerson said. "I just grabbed it and as soon as I threw it, I knew it was a good throw. I knew we had a chance to get him." Luis Ayala recorded the final out of the eighth and Rocky Biddle worked the ninth for his fourth save and second in as many nights. Tom Glavine (2-1), who left his last start with shoulder stiffness, allowed five hits in seven innings and surrendered both of his runs in the fifth. "I felt good out there tonight," Glavine said. "I had a little bit of (stiffness) but I think it's primarily due to the cold weather." Wilkerson doubled to left field to open the fifth and came home when Orlando Cabrera singled. Center fielder Mike Cameron, a two-time Gold Glove winner, allowed the ball to go under his glove and Cabrera wound up at third base. "I had a pretty good chance because the ball was hit pretty hard," Cameron said. "I just overran it." Jose Vidro lined a sacrifice fly to right field, putting the Expos ahead to stay. The Mets scored a run in the second inning but could have had more. Piazza was thrown out by right fielder Juan Rivera trying to score on a single by Shane Spencer, but Joe McEwing followed immediately with a run-scoring single. "There was some pretty good pitching going on in the outfield out there," Montreal manager Frank Robinson said. "There was some good defense all around, and that's what you're going to have to do in close ballgames." New York has lost five of its last six contests.
