Game Story

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The Montreal Expos failed to score more than two runs for the 10th time in 14 games this season. But scoring twice in this one was just enough to halt an eight-game losing streak. Jose Vidro's leadoff home run in the eighth inning off reliever David Weathers lifted the Expos to a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets. "It was a long time coming," Expos manager Frank Robinson said of putting an end to the team's longest losing streak since it closed the 2000 season with nine straight losses. "Jose has been pressing along with the rest of our hitters, but he came through with a big, big, big home run for us." Zach Day (1-1) pitched yet another strong game for the offensively challenged Expos, allowing one run and four hits in seven innings and improving to 4-0 lifetime with a 1.71 ERA against the Mets. Montreal has the second-best ERA in the National League behind Florida, but has scored a total of just 22 runs in 14 games. "I can't worry about our run production when I take the mound," said Day, who had the Mets off balance with a sinker that clocked between 87-91 miles per hour. "My job is to pitch and their job is to score runs. I have to make sure I do my part." Day was rewarded when Vidro snapped a 1-1 tie, tomahawking a 3-2 pitch by Weathers over the right field wall. "I wanted to get a slider in on his hands and I left it over the plate," Weathers said. "It was a breaking ball, but when I hit it I didn't think it was going to go (over the wall)," Vidro said. "It just made it over. But my home run didn't win the game, our pitching won the game. When you score two runs and win, it's the pitching." Luis Ayala pitched a hitless eighth inning and Rocky Biddle retired all three batters he faced in the ninth for his third save in as many chances. The Expos were blanked through five innings by Al Leiter before snapping the lefthander's streak of 29 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, dating to last season, with a run in the sixth to tie the game, 1-1. Leiter hit Einar Diaz with a pitch with one out and Orlando Cabrera kept the inning alive with a two-out infield single. Juan Rivera followed with a single to center for his first RBI in 26 at-bats this season. Leiter's streak was the longest by a Met since Dwight Gooden pitched 31 scoreles innings in 1985 from August 31-Septembr 16. "I knew they (the Expos) were struggling and I had them swinging at my pitch," said Leiter, who allowed five hits in seven innings and has yielded just one run in 17 1/3 innings this season with 12 of those innings coming against Montreal. The Expos nearly ended Leiter's streak in the fourth inning. Diaz and Vidro led off with singles and Cabrera followed with a hard grounder to shortstop Kaz Matsui, who flipped to second baseman Ricky Gutierrez for the start of an apparent double play. But Gutierrez bounced the throw to first baseman Todd Zeile as Cabrera reached safely. The ball did not get too far away from Zeile, yet the slow-footed Diaz tried to score and was easily thrown out at the plate. The Mets scored their only run in the first when Matsui led off with a single, moved to second on a chopper to the right side by Karim Garcia and scored on a two-out single by Mike Piazza. It was the first RBI in 11 games for Piazza.
