Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies are glad they offered Doug Glanville the chance to return home. Glanville led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run off reliever Rocky Biddle to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 victory over the slumping Montreal Expos and a sweep of their three-game series. The Phillies signed Glanville, the team's starting center fielder from 1998-2002, to a one-year contract worth $550,000 in January to serve as a backup to starting outfielders Pat Burrell, Marlon Byrd and Bobby Abreu. The 33-year-old Glanville left Philadelphia and signed with Texas last season after being unseated as the starting center fielder by Byrd. He was acquired by the Chicago Cubs in July and contributed a game-winning triple in the 11th inning of Game Three of the National League Championship Series. But Glanville, who played at the University of Pennsylvania, maintained his home near Philadelphia and wanted to return to the East. After entering as a defensive replacement in the seventh, Glanville seized the moment in the ninth, pulling a 3-1 pitch by Biddle (0-1) over the left field wall. Billy Wagner (1-0) pitched for the fourth time in as many days and threw a scoreless inning to get the win. Jim Thome hit a two-run homer off reliever Jeremy Fikac in the fifth to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead. The Expos tied the game in the seventh when Brian Schneider led off with a triple off reliever Rheal Cormier and scored on a grounder by pinch-hitter Ron Calloway. The Phillies have won four straight since a 1-6 start while the Expos suffered their seventh consecutive loss and fell to 2-10.
