Game Story
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Ticker) -- Dontrelle Willis combined
with three relievers on an eight-hitter and also hit a three-run
homer as the Florida Marlins stretched their winning streak to
six games with a 9-0 rout of the Montreal Expos.
Facing the Expos for the second time in as many starts, Willis
continued his and the Marlins' recent success against Montreal.
He allowed four singles in five innings and won for the fourth
time in five career decisions vs. the Expos.
"There was nothing easy about this game," Willis said. "It was
harder."
The only negative in the reigning National League Rookie of the
Year's outing was his struggles with his command. He tied a
career high by issuing four walks and was lifted after throwing
94 pitches.
"At first my command wasn't that good," Willis said. "But I came
up with the pitches I needed in key situations. It didn't
matter (that I came out) after five. That's the manager's
decision. I don't get involved in that."
Last Thursday at Pro Player Stadium, Willis collected three hits
and in this one he also went 3-for-3. He singled in the first
inning, led off the fourth with a double and hit his second
career homer with two outs in the fifth to give the Marlins an
8-0 advantage.
Florida has won 13 of its last 15 games against Montreal and its
bullpen has not allowed a run in the last seven contests
overall. Former Expos prospect Justin Wayne allowed two hits in
two innings and Nate Bump and Matt Perisho tossed an inning
apiece.
Montreal starter Tomo Ohka (0-2) faced Willis for the second
straight start was tagged for five runs - three earned - and
eight hits in four innings.
"His biggest problem was control," Expos manager Frank Robinson
said. "He feeds off the first pitch strike but he couldn't get
it going tonight. You could just see it from one hitter to the
next."
Florida has scored 29 runs during their run and jumped on the
Expos early, scoring in the first five innings.
Mike Lowell got things going with an RBI single in the first,
Hee Seop Choi hit his fourth homer to make it 2-0 in the second,
Mike Redmond had a two-run base hit in the third and Luis
Castillo added a run-scoring single in the fourth.
Willis, who has a career .313 batting average (20-of-64), put
the game out of reach by sending reliever Jeremy Fikac's 2-2
pitch over the right field fence.
Miguel Cabrera, who homered twice Tuesday, capped the scoring
with his major league-leading sixth homer in the eighth. He
homered for the fourth straight game, tying the team record set
by Kurt Abbott in 1994 and matched by Preston Wilson in 2000.
"I wasn't thinking about (the home run) streak," Cabrera said.
"I was just looking to get a hit to score some more runs but I
hit it good and it went out."
Montreal fell to 1-4 in Puerto Rico and has scored just four
runs. The Expos have managed just 10 runs in through eight
games, the lowest total in team history.
"Nothing's happening," Robinson said. "No one's on base,
nobody's moving around the bases. (If) you're going to look
like that, you're going to look like you're not putting the
effort in. How much effort does it take to run down the first
base line and turn right?"
