Game Story
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Ticker) -- Brad Penny again had his way
with the Montreal Expos, and he had plenty of help from Miguel
Cabrera.
Penny struck out 10 in eight innings and Cabrera hit a pair of
homers and drove in three runs as the Florida Marlins continued
their strong start with a 5-0 blanking of the Expos.
The Marlins have won five straight games and are 6-1 overall,
their best start since winning eight of nine to open the 1997
season.
Penny (1-1) avenged a loss to Montreal last week at Pro Player
Stadium and improved to 11-3 against the Expos since making his
major league debut in 2000. Since the start of that season, no
pitcher has defeated the Expos more than Penny. Tom Glavine of
the New York Mets is second with eight wins.
"I was locked in early," Penny said. "I didn't have my best
fastball, but I was making pitches on the outside corner.
Nobody has lost yet and you don't want to have the only two
losses on the team."
Penny allowed just two hits - singles to Carl Everett in the
fourth and Peter Bergeron in the sixth - and walked just one.
Tommy Phelps allowed two hits in the ninth.
"That's the best game I've seen him pitch in a long time,"
Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. "He had outstanding stuff and
complete command."
Cabrera opened the scoring with a two-out homer to right field
in the first inning.
"We didn't do anything out there," Expos manager Frank Robinson
said. "The game was over in the first inning."
Montreal was shut out for the second time and has a mere 10 runs
in seven games this season.
"We're not really giving ourselves a chance of winning a
ballgame," first baseman Brad Wilkerson said. "It's not very
much fun now."
The Marlins added to their lead in the third when Juan Pierre
doubled, went to third on an error by center fielder Bergeron
and scored on a single by Cabrera.
Cabrera hit his fifth homer of the season to lead off the sixth.
"I'll take those," Cabrera said. "We need to keep working,
because our staff is pitching good and we need to support that."
Both of his homers came off Claudio Vargas (1-1), who defeated
Penny last week but lasted just six innings Tuesday, allowing
four runs - three earned - and six hits.
The Marlins added another run in the inning when Mike Lowell
reached on a two-base error by right fielder Everett and scored
on a single by Jeff Conine.
Pierre, who had three hits, made it 5-0 with an RBI single in
the ninth.
