Game Story
PUERTO RICO (Ticker) -- John Patterson was worth the wait for
the Montreal Expos.
Eight years after being drafted by the Expos, Patterson made his
first start for them and threw seven scoreless innings in a 1-0
victory over the New York Mets.
Peter Bergeron delivered a clutch two-out, RBI single in the
seventh inning for the game's only run.
The 26-year-old Patterson (1-0) was a first-round selection of
the Expos in 1996 but was declared a free agent on a
technicality and signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the
Diamondbacks, Patterson appeared in 16 games and was 1-4 with a
6.05 ERA. Montreal got him back from Arizona on March 25 for
reliever Randy Choate.
"It has been a long time coming," said Patterson, who allowed
just two hits. "Eight years later, I finally get a start for the
Expos. It felt great to put the uniform on. This really is a
great clubhouse. I like these guys a lot and everybody wants to
win really bad."
Chad Cordero pitched the eighth inning and Rocky Biddle worked a
hitless ninth for his second save.
"That was a tremendous performance out there by John," said
Expos manager Frank Robinson. "It was exactly what we needed.
Right now we can't afford to give up one run."
New York's Al Leiter made his first start since he was hit in
the head with a line drive by Florida's Alex Gonzalez in an
exhibition game on April 3. But he showed no lingering effects,
pitching five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits.
"I felt comfortable out there," Leiter said. "I made some big
pitches, especially in the fourth inning."
In that inning, the Expos had runners on second and third and
none out and failed to score. Leiter struck out Tony Batista
and got Luis Lopez to ground out with the infield in before
Einar Diaz lined out to left to end the inning.
But after throwing 97 pitches, Leiter was pulled in favor of Jae
Seo (0-1), who was sent to the minor leagues after spring
training and then was recalled after Scott Erickson was placed
on the 15-day disabled list Friday. Seo gave up the only run in
the seventh inning.
Brad Wilkerson led off the inning with a double and moved to
third on a sacrifice by Diaz. After Ron Calloway grounded out
to first, Bergeron delivered a single past third base.
"With two strikes I'm just trying to shorten up and put it in
play," Bergeron said. "He threw the changeup and I was able to
stay back on it."
The Mets had runners on first and second and one out in the
second inning, but Ty Wigginton struck out and Joe McEwing flied
to center to end the inning.
In the fourth, Cliff Floyd doubled and advanced to third on a
grounder by Mike Piazza. But Mike Cameron grounded out with the
infield in and Jason Phillips popped out.
"We didn't capitalize on our opportunities," said Mets manager
Art Howe. "There are going to be many games like these. I just
hope we can pull some out ourselves."
