Game Story
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Ticker) -- Todd Zeile earned a measure
of redemption and the New York Mets got a much-needed victory.
One night after failing to get the job done as a pinch hitter,
Zeile delivered an RBI double in the top of the 11th inning as
the Mets edged the Montreal Expos, 3-2, at Hiram Bithorn
Stadium.
Zeile grounded out in the seventh inning with the tying run in
scoring position on Thursday and entered this game as part of a
double switch in the bottom of the eighth inning. After popping
out in the ninth, he crushed a long double into the left-center
field gap in the 11th.
"It was a quality at-bat," Zeile said. "I guess if I'm going to
come off the bench, that will be a good game situation, an RBI
situation."
Karim Garcia opened the 11th against Luis Ayala (0-2) with a
single, but Ty Wigginton bunted into a forceout. Zeile then got
his teammate off the hook by driving a 1-2 pitch into the gap,
easily scoring Wigginton.
"We had pressure on him (Ayala) every other inning," Zeile said.
"I had never faced him before. I did play with him last year
and watched him pitch. I know his strength - that sidearm,
two-seam fastball. I just put the barrel to it."
After two tough losses in Atlanta, New York took a 2-0 lead into
the eighth, only to see closer Braden Looper surrender the
lead.
"When they tied the game we never gave up," Mets manager Art
Howe said. "It was a tough one at that point. We played a
great baseball game. It was baseball at its purest."
David Weathers (1-0), who tossed a scoreless 10th inning,
notched the win and prospect Orber Moreno worked around a
two-out walk to pinch hitter Ron Callaway to notch the save.
The Mets got a superb start from Tyler Yates in his major league
debut. The 26-year-old righthander allowed five singles, did
not walk a batter and struck out four in six innings.
Montreal starter Zach Day allowed two runs and three hits in
five innings. He walked four but struck out seven.
Cliff Floyd staked the Mets to a 1-0 lead with his first homer
of the season in the opening inning. New York tacked on a run
in the fourth on a forceout by Garcia that plated Floyd.
Montreal rallied against relievers Mike Stanton and Looper in
the eighth. Brian Schneider opened the inning with a single and
Jamey Carroll walked. After a bunt by Peter Bergeron moved
both runners into scoring position, Looper came on and Jose
Vidro blooped a double inside the left field line to tie the
game.
The Mets had the potential go-ahead run thrown out at the plate
in the ninth and Montreal left two aboard in the 10th.
